  • 1 pound Beef Sirloin or Flank Steak thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1/2 cup Cornstarch substitute with gluten-free if needed
  • 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour can use gluten-free flour
  • 1 large Egg omit for vegan version
  • 1/4 cup Water adjust for batter consistency
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • to taste teaspoon Salt
  • to taste teaspoon Pepper
For Frying
  • 1 cup Vegetable Oil high-smoke point
For the Sauce
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce or tamari for gluten-free
  • 2 tablespoons Rice Vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Hoisin Sauce
  • 1-2 tablespoons Chili Sauce adjust for spice level
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar
  • 2 cloves Minced Garlic
  • 1 tablespoon Minced Ginger
For the Stir-Fry
  • 1 medium Onion sliced
  • 1 medium Bell Pepper sliced
  • optional Red Chilies for extra heat
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame Oil can substitute with olive oil
  • Chopped Green Onions for garnish

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions for Crispy Chilli Beef
  1. Begin by slicing the beef sirloin or flank steak thinly against the grain into strips about 1/4 inch thick. Set the beef aside to come to room temperature.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine cornstarch, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper. Gradually add the beaten egg and water, whisking until smooth.
  3. In a large frying pan, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until shimmering. Test with a drop of batter to check if ready.
  4. Dip beef strips in the batter and fry in batches for 3-4 minutes until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  5. In a separate wok, heat sesame oil and sauté garlic, ginger, onion, and bell pepper for 2 minutes until tender.
  6. Stir in soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, chili sauce, and sugar. Let simmer for about 2 minutes.
  7. Add the fried beef to the sauce and toss to coat. Stir-fry for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  8. Garnish with red chilies and chopped green onions. Serve immediately.
