Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 pounds of ground beef, ½ cup of breadcrumbs, 1 beaten egg, 1 finely diced onion, 2 teaspoons of salt, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper. Mix until just combined, shape into 6 to 8 oval patties and set aside to rest for 10 minutes.
  2. Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat for about 2 minutes. Add the shaped patties, cooking for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove the patties and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add 3 tablespoons of butter and the sliced onion. Sauté for 4 to 5 minutes until softened.
  4. Sprinkle 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour over the sautéed onions, stirring for about 2 minutes. Gradually whisk in 2 cups of beef broth and 1 cup of heavy cream. Whisk until smooth and thickened, then simmer for about 5 minutes.
  5. Carefully nestle the browned patties back into the skillet and cover with gravy. Cover tightly with foil.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer covered skillet to oven and bake for 45 minutes.
  7. After 45 minutes, remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes to thicken the gravy.
  8. Remove from the oven and let sit for 10 minutes before serving.
