  • 1/2 cup refried beans optional for bean-free version
  • 1 pound ground beef can substitute with turkey or chicken
  • 2 tablespoons taco seasoning homemade recommended for fresh taste
  • 1 tablespoon dried minced onion or 1/4 cup finely diced yellow onion
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup chunky salsa choose preferred brand or heat level
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese other cheese types can be substituted
  • 1 cup crushed tortilla chips or Fritos
For Toppings
  • to taste fresh cilantro
  • to taste sliced lettuce
  • to taste chopped tomatoes
  • to taste sliced jalapeño
  • to taste sour cream
  • to taste hot sauce

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the pie crust by placing it in a pie dish and pricking the bottom with a fork.
  3. Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat for 5–7 minutes until fully cooked.
  4. Stir in taco seasoning, dried minced onion (or fresh onion), water, and salsa. Simmer for 2–3 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in 3/4 cup of cheddar cheese until melted.
  6. Spread refried beans on the bottom of the crust, then layer the beef mixture on top.
  7. Sprinkle crushed tortilla chips over the beef, and top with remaining 3/4 cup of cheddar cheese.
  8. Bake in the oven for 25–30 minutes until the crust is golden and cheese is bubbly.
  9. Let the Taco Pie rest for 10 minutes, then garnish with cilantro, lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream.
