Steps to Prepare
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk and half of the granulated sugar over medium-low heat.
  2. Whisk together the remaining sugar, large egg yolks, vanilla extract, and salt in a separate bowl until smooth and creamy.
  3. Gradually pour the hot milk into the egg yolk mixture while whisking continuously to temper the eggs.
  4. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly until thickened.
  5. Strain the custard through a fine mesh sieve into a clean bowl.
  6. Set the bowl in an ice bath to cool until room temperature, then refrigerate for at least one hour.
  7. Serve warm or cold over your favorite desserts.
